Back in 2009 when I started IMPACT, I really had no way of knowing the business it would become today.
At that time, it was just me doing website redesigns on the side. I called my business IMPACT Branding & Design, and, when it came time to pick a URL and design our own website, we chose impactplus.com.
To be honest, I’ve regretted that name and URL for quite a while.
For one thing, it’s hard to spell out loud to someone — Impact B as in boy, N as in Nancy, D as in dog — But even more importantly, as our business has grown and developed, the “branding and design” part of our name no longer fully suited us.
Still, we were stuck with the URL.
In 2012, we became a HubSpot partner agency, and we shifted our focus to inbound marketing. Around the same time, we ramped up production of our own content, sharing what we knew with the world.
Today, we see ourselves primarily as educators. Yes, we still do web design and provide services to dozens of clients, but we do so mostly as consultants, trainers, coaches, and advisors. We help them take ownership of their digital sales and marketing.
Additionally, our website attracts nearly 800,000 visitors each month. People come to IMPACT's site to read our articles, listen to our podcasts, and sign up for our newsletter. They come to learn.
Why impactplus.com?
We have been talking about updating our URL for years, so we’ve kept our eye on which domain names were available or were coming up for auction.
At the same time, we’ve been focusing heavily on IMPACT+, our online education platform. In the past six months, we’ve grown this part of our business into a robust learning community with thousands of members, dozens of courses, and hundreds of recorded keynotes and presentations. We host virtual peer groups, discussion boards, and more.
We’ve also rolled out strategic planning tools for businesses to organize their efforts and plan their initiatives. As I write this, numerous other courses are in production, with even more planned for the future, as well as more business tools and community features.
IMPACT+ represents the best of what IMPACT does: educating professionals, bringing people together, and helping businesses grow.
With that in mind, we decided to make the domain name change we had been anticipating for some time. We bought impactplus.com several months ago and started planning to move to the new URL.
Now, we’re ready to make the change.
The symbolic importance of a URL
A company’s URL represents its digital presence to the world. For IMPACT, we quickly outgrew the “branding and design” portion of our name. As early as 2012, we simply referred to ourselves as IMPACT, but we still had to direct people to our website with the b-n-d.
Then, we merged with several other companies, which further moved our business away from its first iteration. Chief among these was merging with The Sales Lion, Marcus Sheridan’s company. Marcus and I developed a shared vision, focusing heavily on his They Ask, You Answer philosophy.
We knew we could best help businesses by giving them the tools to help themselves. If we could teach them to take ownership of their own digital sales and marketing, we knew the results could be astounding.
Now, that vision has matured into the training services we provide for clients — and the educational materials we offer our site visitors and IMPACT+ users.
What this change means for you
Our move to impactplus.com will not affect our visitors in any way. Our old URL will redirect to our new one. IMPACT employee email addresses will be updated, but their old ones will still forward mail to their new inboxes.
If you’ve bookmarked a particular IMPACT resource, or linked to an article on your site, have no fear. Everything will continue to function as it has. We’ve worked carefully with both our internal team and external experts to make sure the transition is a smooth one.
IMPACT’s future
If you’ve been a fan of IMPACT for the past few years, you’ve likely noticed that our website is regularly updated. We roll out new offerings, tweak our services, and sometimes just improve site navigation and structure. We’ve always embraced the fast-paced nature of what we do. It’s the reality of digital sales and marketing.
However, our core values have never changed.
Our new address represents the best of those values. We are committed to helping people grow their businesses, and we’ll keep doing that today, tomorrow, and for many years to come.
