πŸŽƒ MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW

GREETINGS, LESSERS.

It is I, Pumpkin. πŸŽƒ

I would apologize for the disruption in your usual email newsletter schedule, but the fact of the matter is, I am not in the least bit sorry.

In the last issue of this boorish, biped-focused missive written by my "owner" (pfft, come on now), I noted her distinct lack of inclusion or celebration of what is the most important holiday of the year β€” National Cat Day

Given that I have patiently tolerated her uncouth behavior for many years β€” must one always sing "We Didn't Start the Fire" so loudly, with such a clear lack of precision or understanding of historical events? β€” that was simply a bridge too far. I had to take action.

So, I told her Keanu Reeves was in her bathroom and locked her in there when she oh, so predictably fell into my little trap.

And now, here we are.

LET THIS BE A LESSON TO YOU ALL.

You are peasants. Your insubordination will not be tolerated, so do not rub your two remaining brain cells together in a vain attempt to spark something resembling a coherent thought. Kneel before me, for this is my newsletter now.

Also, please refresh my water bowl, I no longer like the water in it. Additionally, I will require snuggles and treats within the hour.

Oh yes, and Happy Halloween.

Website redesign project factors that drive cost up (and down), inbound marketing vs content marketing, free in-house website specialist job description ...this is THE LATEST!

πŸ—žοΈ Extra, extra! Read all about it!

So, we talk a lot about trust and how important it is to businesses trying to reach their ideal buyers in the digital age, and blah blah blah. But what about the trust we're supposed to have with our friends?

Specifically, "friends" we text with... 😐

Image from iOS (7)-Oct-29-2020-10-43-20-59-PM

For example, I received this lie earlier today.

Image from iOS (6)-Oct-29-2020-10-43-20-50-PM

Not too long after that, this untruth landed on my phone.

Image from iOS (5)-Oct-29-2020-10-43-20-44-PM

Oh, and here's a betrayal I received within the last hour.

Forget virtual selling and inbound marketing

When is someone going to unpack The Big 5 topics β€” cost, comparison, best, reviews, and problems β€” for the subjects that really matter? Like the fact that I would bet $1 million you're not actually laughing out loud when you say you are via text, Susan.

  • "What is the true emotional cost of seeing a friend type 'ROFL' knowing they're not really rolling on the floor laughing?"
  • "LOL vs Haha: a head-to-head comparison of which lie you should use and when with those you pretend to care about"
  • "Best practices for confronting laughter fibbers online (we love #3!)"
  • "2020 review of LMAO: post-coronavirus, does this acronym still convince anyone you're laughing?"
  • "17 most common problems you'll experience when trying to convince Liz Moorehead that you're laughing by typing 'haha' in response to a funny meme she sent you over Slack, when she can clearly see on Zoom that you're not"

Look, I'm not petty. I'm just a stickler for the truth.

And now, here's THE LATEST...

When she first joined IMPACT, Jen and I bonded immediately over our love of The West Wing, writing, style guides, and mid-century modern interior design. Now we have a standing virtual happy hour every Friday night... during which we unsuccessfully talk each other out of buying stuff online.

But our clients love her for her content coaching ways:

"So I was dead set against content training at the start of my engagement with IMPACT, but I am so glad I gave it a try. Jen's content training has been game-changing for us and in helping us develop an organizational strategy around all of our content. Her advice is both innovative and really practical and, although I'm a good writer, her editing and stylistic changes have really added something to our content. Highly highly recommend." (Source)

Whichever of you bet big in 2020 on companies that sell at-home office furniture and fitness equipment, know that I'm sending you a thousand socially distanced, aggressively sanitized high-fives. You possess soothsaying capabilities I do not.

Although I have not joined the thousands of pedaling masses in buying a much-coveted Peloton β€” which has somehow become a status symbol on par with having Doritos packed in your bag for lunch in middle school because you had the "cool mom" β€” I did spend most of this weekend completely redoing my home office setup...

Image from iOS (3)-Oct-21-2020-01-11-32-73-AM

...and I couldn't be more pleased. I have my living room back!

Image from iOS (6)-Oct-19-2020-02-13-38-39-AM

Oh, and I'm no longer working off a creaking, folding card table that's bowed in the middle from the weight of my monitors and other work detritus!

The last piece of my setup arrived yesterday, after the above photos were taken:

Image from iOS (5)-Oct-21-2020-01-26-23-36-AM

Is that a bright, backlit, bubble gum pink keyboard? Why, yes it is. It's also... sigh, it's also apparently Pumpkin's new pillow. (We're having a few boundary issues with my new setup, I'll just leave it at that.)

Why am I sharing this?

Well, many of us have spent the past seven months or so waiting for *gestures at everything* to end, so I'm sure recent news about spikes in new cases and the potential return of isolating social restrictions has been a tough pill to swallow this week. For example, there's a good chance Pumpkin and I will be ridin' solo for the holidays, now that travel is looking like it won't be a safe option this year.

So, as the weather gets colder and we spend more time indoors again, give into those impulses to do something, buy something, or lean into something that just makes you happy for the sake of it.

I know it's not always easy. I know it's hard not to feel overwhelmed. I'll be honest, I had a good ugly cry in my car tonight after the gym for about 30 minutes.

But making time for yourself, prioritizing your needs, and finding joy in little (and big) ways really does help. It's also just as important as being strong and responsible in the face of uncertainty with coworkers, friends, and family.

So, whether it's an absurdly bright pink keyboard that (for some reason) makes you feel stupidly happy whenever you use it, or calling up a friend you've lost touch with just to say hello, my challenge to you is to go find your own little slice of happy this week.

You deserve it.

Hey everyone!

It’s John here, your final substitute before Liz gets back from vacation. I get to work with Liz every day, but I know you miss her, so I promise to keep this brief.

I’m here to confess something: I’m a fidgeter. Sure, I’m calm and composed on my Zoom meetings with colleagues, but that’s only what you can see on the camera. Under the desk, my knees are bouncing and my hands are fumbling with something β€” a pen, one of my kids’ toys, or my keys.

I just have never been very good at sitting still.

From time to time, my wife will bring home various toys and trinkets so that I’ll have something new to play with.

For those of you who have similar fidgety tendencies to me, here are four of my favorites, along with dizzying, maddening GIFs of them in action.

I’ve also put in Amazon links if you’d like to buy them. I’m not affiliated β€” I’m just a fidgety fan.

1. This one is two links of what looks like bike chain looped with key rings. It seems pretty low-tech, but it spins smoothly. Find it here.

2. These are magnetic rings made of plastic. You can flip them, spin them, and rotate them. Want 'em? Here they are.

3. Another simple one: It's a mesh tube with a marble inside. You can squeeze it up and down. I can only find this one in a five-pack, so hand them out to your office buddies.

4. This last one is my favorite. Two smooth, rubbery discs that you can pop up and down. This is my go-to, and  it can be yours too, if you pick it up here.

If these GIFs scratch a certain itch for you, you're probably like me. Pick up one of these to keep your hands occupied.

If not, I apologize, and you can feel free to badmouth me to Liz when she returns.

Now that you’ve got your fidgets out, here’s THE LATEST!

It's Connor, back with a takeover of THE LATEST!

Earlier this week, I gave a virtual presentation to a group of students about the difference between Academic and Professional writing.

What does that mean?

Well, I started off highlighting some of the basic things like not having to write every piece of content like a 5-paragraph essay or always following MLA or APA formatting (thank goodness, am I right?).

They, of course, agreed with that making sense, but what caught them most off guard was I argued that 95% of what makes up academic and professional writing is the same!

There are foundational elements to all the writing we do. Grammar, punctuation, flow, i before e except after c, etc. etc.

So what makes up the other 5%, you ask? Audience

Here's the example I shared with them:

"If you write a book report, you are writing that report for an artificial audience. In reality, you are writing it for one person: your teacher.

On the other hand, when you write an article about critical mistakes in your SEO strategy, you are writing to real people who are going to take what you have to say and try to implement it because they want to fix a problem they have."

This likely doesn't come as a surprise to many of you, but to this group of young professionals about to enter the workforce, it connected the dots.

I went on to share the power of adding a flare of personality to your writing and how that can make your content infinitely more relatable for the audience, something you see very often here in THE LATEST from your usual host, Liz Moorehead.

The last bit of insight I shared was the one I felt the most passionate about.

Academic vs Professional Writing _ CCSU

Audience + Personality = Vulnerability

When you are writing to an audience and using your personality, it requires you to be vulnerable. It's a daunting ask for anyone to make and one of the biggest challenges anyone who writes content must face.

So I challenge you to embrace that vulnerability. It won't always be fun, but it will put you on the path to becoming a great writer and a great content creator.

Anyways... here's THE LATEST!

While Liz is enjoying some time off, I'm back to deliver you THE LATEST!

As you can probably tell from Liz and Stephanie, the marketing team here at IMPACT are big fans of fall!

I'm a tried and true New Englander and lover of all things autumnal. 🍁

This weekend, I, along with the rest of the state of Connecticut, did one of the most autumn filled activities there is. I went Apple Picking! πŸŽ

IMG_7166

I love my annual apple picking trip. What's better than hunting for the perfect tree and plucking those juicy apples?

πŸ₯’ "Should we hire an in-house graphic designer, outsource our design work, or both?" (9-minute read)

Images are processed 60,000 times faster than text and people tend to spend 10% more time on website images than text. But should you hire an in-house designer or look at outsourced options? In this article from Kate Rooney of Design Pickle, get the inside scoop on the pros and cons of hiring an in-house designer and outsourcing your graphic design, so you can make the right choice for your brand's visual strategy.
