5 holiday video marketing trends and lessons you can't ignore, 23 eye-opening inclusive marketing statistics that prove its power in 2021, and what we're thankful for as content nerds ...this is THE LATEST!

๐Ÿฆƒ Gobble, gobble! Wobble all about it!

๐Ÿฆƒ Right now you can get tickets to our final virtual event of 2020, a two-day video spectacular called Video Sales & Marketing World. Get your tickets for just $45 using the code STOVETOP!

Here in the United States, it's the annual poultry-based eating-and-football endurance test we all lovingly call Thanksgiving โ€” so, to those of you who celebrate, I hope you're having a safe and wonderful holiday!

(And if you're a Detroit Lions fan... I'm sorry. As a Washington fan, I relate.)

Although I'm more of a Christmas gal myself โ€” I may have put up my tree two weeks ago โ€” I've been counting down the days to turkey day this year, just so I could finally break this bad boy out:

If you don't know why, "As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly," is one of the most iconic lines ever uttered in a sitcom, you need to educate yourself. (Fun fact, it's available to watch on Amazon Prime for $1.99.)

Anyway, I threw on that festive little number for an unexpected trail hike in New Haven today:

If you were a subscriber of THE LATEST back at the start of this year, you know that when the pandemic first hit, I spent hours and hours and hours every single week walking these trails.

They started as a fun cure for my cabin fever filled with fresh air and natural beauty โ€” oh, and they also helped offset my increased quarantine cheese intake.

But within a few months, those hikes became soul-crushing reminders of my isolation after having moved to a new place following a divorce, as well as my distinct lack of any real options for human contact.

So, I stopped going.

Image from iOS (5)-Nov-26-2020-08-50-49-89-PM

Today was the first time I had been back on these trails in at least six months. Much to my surprise, I found myself feeling overwhelmed with positivity and gratitude for this little loop in East Rock Park.

I even shimmied across one of the bridges while jamming out to "Another Rock and Roll Christmas" by Gary Glitter. (Thankfully, no one else was around to see that dancing disaster. Yikes.)

Looking back on that initial stretch of time when I first moved here and everything had shut down, I see now how much I found myself on these trails. I mulled over big life questions, confronted a few long dormant demons, and finally got to know myself in a deep and meaningful way.

I left East Rock Park this afternoon basking in the glow of my own gratitude.

Sadly, my blissful Thanksgiving Day happiness bubble was brutally punctured within hours.

You see, the moment I got home and sat down on my couch with a small bag of popcorn, I felt a tiny paw reach up on my thigh... and I realized something:

Image from iOS (6)-Nov-26-2020-09-07-31-37-PM

It doesn't matter how many triumphs and breakthroughs (personal or professional) I experience, this fuzzy gremlin will not care. To Pumpkin, I am merely a vessel for popcorn. Nothing more. Nothing less.

And that will never, ever change.๐Ÿ™

๐Ÿฆƒ A very special episode of Content Lab has dropped just in time for Thanksgiving Day (1-minute read + podcast)

Pandemic weirdness aside, IMPACT Revenue and Features Editor John Becker and I realized we still had a lot we were grateful for. So, in this week's holiday episode, John and I gathered 'round our virtual turkey day table to talk about what we're so thankful for this year. Also, if you'd like to know what Millard Fillmore, Rasputin, Keanu Reeves, and Genghis Khan all have in common (really)... you'll need to listen to this wild, hilarious, and heartwarming episode

๐Ÿ‘‹ Right now you can get tickets to our final virtual event of 2020, a two-day video spectacular called Video Sales & Marketing World tickets for just $45 using the code BOARDWALK

Hey everybody!

Stephanie's newsletter issue on Tuesday got me curious. It seems like every day there's something to celebrate. The skeptic in me thinks these are just shameless promotions. I mean, today is national caffeinated soda day. Is anyone else suspicious that the beverage industry might have had a hand in that? ๐Ÿค”

Anyway, I'm choosing to focus on another celebratory occasion today: National Play Monopoly Day. Or, as it could alternately be called: National Start a Three-hour-slow-simmering-family-argument Day

When I was a kid, my Monopoly strategy was simple: Boardwalk and Park Place. I couldn't be concerned with any of the plebeian, ramshackle properties on the rest of the board. Oh no, I was going to save up to buy the two biggest, ritziest squares out there.

monopoly

Then, I'd bide my time, slowly building a two-property empire with exorbitant prices that were sure to take a family member out of the game if they were unlucky enough to land on them.

"Oh, welcome to Boardwalk, mom. I hope to enjoy your stay!" (add maniacal laughter).

via GIPHY

Of course, this strategy didn't always work. I'd often get raked across the coals at my brother's Marvin's Gardens, a fine upper-middle class establishment with pleasing water views (if you like that kind of thing), or fall victim to the more bottom-shelf Vermont Ave. in the light blue neighborhood where you'd probably not like to leave your car overnight.

Sometimes I'd even have to take a ride on the Reading Railroad. Ugh.

Whatever strategy, whatever house rules you use, Monopoly is an American classic. And the good folks at Hasbro (formerly it was Parker Brothers) have probably conceived of this day to remind us that board games can still bring people together, even as we bleed our loved ones dry with high rents and spurious banking activities.

Enjoy the day and play a game of Monopoly! But no one else gets to be the top hat. That one's mine.

๐ŸŽฉ

In the Monopoly spirit, you can get tickets to our upcoming two-day virtual event, Video Sales & Marketing World for just $45 (currently $99) using the code BOARDWALK.

This event will teach you why video will be vital to your sales and marketing strategy in 2021 and exactly what you need to do to be prepare. So roll the dice and land on your $45 ticket with the code BOARDWALK.

๐Ÿ’ป Google updates search ranking signals (4-minute read)

When Google makes a change to its ranking factors, everyone notices. Recently, the search engine giant announced that Core Web Vitals will become ranking signals in May, 2021. This means that three new metrics relating to load time, interactivity, and visual stability will be factored in to page rank. Creative Lead and all-around unicorn Christine Austin explains what Google's announcement means, and how you can prepare your site for the searchers of tomorrow.

Short answer: yes, but their importance keeps diminishing. More and more, search engines are focusing on the intent of the searcher, even if that's not reflected verbatim in their search. Director of Operations Kaitlyn Petro breaks down the most recent Google updates, and what you need to know

Happy National Homemade Bread Day!

Yep, Tuesday, November 17, 2020 is National Homemade Bread Day here in the US.

Says who? Honestly, I don't know. The origins of this day continue to elude me but hey, any excuse for warm, fresh bread, right?

My brother and one of my best friends both love making fresh bread for our summer picnics and I love eating it.

I remember in the early days of the pandemic, so many people tried their hand at making bread that Americaโ€™s oldest flour company, King Arthur, experienced a massive surge in demand for its flour as well as a spike in calls to its hotline.

According to Forbes, "the 230-year-old company sold about 6.1 million bags of all-purpose flour in March, a 268% increase from the prior year." (That's insane!)

I never made any quarantine bread. Actually, I've never made bread, period. I've said for years that I was going to take a stab at it but even the most recently purchased yeast I have is long past its expiration date. My friend even gave me this King Arthur recipe for simple, no-knead peasant bread and I haven't even tried that.

In fact, about 3 years ago when we were building our wedding registry the one thing my wife excitedly said she wanted was a bread maker. So we registered for one and some lovely family member got it for us.

bread maker

The sad, unused bread maker still sitting in a box in our basement.

Many moons have passed since we received this bread maker. We've gotten married, gone on vacations, and even moved to a new house. Yet, we have yet to ever use our bread maker. Why? Well, it turns out my wife didn't want to use a bread maker. She wanted me to use the bread maker and make her some bread.

Which, honestly, I should've seen coming.

Who knows, maybe today will be the day I finally give it a shot.

But another thing I want to do in honor of National Homemade Bread Day is give you a gift! Because what are holidays without presents?

That's why for RIGHT NOW you can get tickets to our upcoming two-day virtual event, Video Sales & Marketing World for just $45 (currently $99) using the code CARBS. (Please laugh at this like I did.)

While this event won't teach you how to make bread, it will teach you why video will be vital to your sales and marketing strategy in 2021 and exactly what you need to do to be prepare.

So grab your $45 ticket now using the code CARBS.

As I laid in bed this morning counting the dots on my ceiling and passively pondering the inevitable heat death of the universe, I realized something. Much like Carina's most recent article on HubSpot pros and cons, my days are almost entirely governed by weighing pros and cons.

I'll show you what I mean...

Decision 1: I should get out of bed

Con: Out of bed is the bad place, it is cold and devoid of fuzzy blankets.

Pro: Being employed is a good thing.

Decision 2: I should get in the shower

Con: Shower is the cold, wet, dark place, and there's a lot of effort involved.

Pro: Not smelling is a good thing.

Decision 3: I should get out of the shower

Con: Beyond the shower is dangerous. Here, I am cleansed, free, safe.

Pro: Ew, pruned fingers are gross.

Decision 4: I should put on real clothing

Con: Mmmm, pajamas. Nature's hug.

Pro: I will likely not be taken seriously during a meeting in a penguin onesie.

And on, and on.

Now, should you read THE LATEST?

Con: Eh, it's Saturday and napping is awesome.

Pro: It'll take you less than five minutes to get through it, and afterward you'll be able to make smarter decisions faster โ€” you can't lose.

I'll leave you to make your choice.

I've had the pleasure of working with IMPACT VP of Revenue Melanie Collins for a few years now, and we had an absolute blast rolling up our sleeves together as we (and others) helped build IMPACT's first revenue team this summer.

In addition to being a rockstar sales leader, what makes Melanie so wonderful to work with is her heart and how much she genuinely cares about people on her team. I've experienced this first-hand myself, but this story from fellow IMPACTer Genna Lepore sums it up:

"This week has been a doozy. Starting last Friday, my son was very sick and then I got pneumonia. Even though as a manager, it's her job to support me, Melanie has gone above and beyond and taken deals I was working on and knocked the work out of the park.I am so grateful for the support in what's been one crazy week. I know I should respond to the great injustice and "bamboozling" that happened to me in the last issue. Or that I should spend my time talking about seemingly "more important" topics like video sales call closing strategies or content creation

But given the historical and cultural moment we are living through right now, I simply can't do it.

I can't ignore what we're all focused on today.

I can't ignore the great choice we have ahead of us.

I can't ignore the fact that today is National Sandwich Day.

My hope is that today we can unite as a country.

More than that, I hope we can finally come together and decide whether or not a hot dog is a sandwich โ€” or at least reconcile peacefully as a nation, as we agree to disagree on this generations-old, Hatfield-and-McCoy-esque debate.

No matter what side of this argument you fall on, let this be a moment of true, lasting union, as we celebrate sandwiches of all shapes, sizes, and ingredients.

And when you finally do enjoy your sandwich today, I strongly encourage you to print out this sticker I personally designed for you all to wear as a proud display to others that you have exercised your right as a sandwich-eating citizen:
