Can AI actually build your marketing strategy?

What it looks like when AI and a coach work on the same task together
A few weeks ago, I got an email from a prospect canceling a scheduled call. The company had read the Endless Customers book, built their content plan with AI, and were relaunching their website without any outside help. They sounded thrilled. Frankly, we were thrilled with them.
The system can work. Even without us.
That story is becoming more common, and it raises a harder question for any company doing the same thing right now. How much of that AI-built strategy is working, and how would you know if a piece of it wasn't?
At IMPACT, we help businesses become the most known, trusted, and recommended company in their market through the Endless Customers System. While we also help them understand the role of AI in that process, some companies choose to implement it on their own with the help of AI.
AI can get you part of the way there. This article gets into what happens in the gap it leaves: what AI catches on its own, what it misses, and what still depends on a person who has watched this system play out across other companies before.
Can AI actually build a marketing strategy for your business?
Yes. Ask AI to build you a marketing strategy, and it will hand you one.
What determines a good strategy from a great strategy is the context you give it. And you have to know enough about marketing to evaluate whether the output is accurate, doable, and tailored properly for your business.
When you give AI a system like Endless Customers to work from, instead of asking it to invent a strategy from nothing, and the result changes.
The system hands AI a clear direction: what to prioritize, what a strategy needs to include, and what good looks like for a company like yours. Feed it that structure the same way you would tell it your industry, your location, or details about your business, and the output gets more tailored and more defined.
Turning outputs into action
AI is a tool, the same way any other tool is. It can enable you to move faster. (i.e., the evolution of horse to carriage to car to plane). It doesn't replace the judgment to know what a good marketing strategy looks like.
And in order to make that strategy work, you have to know what comes first. AI is really great a checklist, but it might not know what the most important priorities are that will move the needle for your business.
Plus, you have to create the time, space, and resources to implement your marketing strategy. Without that, your marketing strategy is just another document in your Google Drive.
If you're ready to prioritize the strategy that comes out of a coaching engagement, AI, or both, AI can help you get there faster.

Where can AI mess up your marketing strategy?
AI can't flag its own blind spots, because it doesn't know what it doesn't know about your business. It writes with total confidence even when it's missing context, so the gaps only show up after you've already published the wrong version.
Good context is what closes that gap. AI needs to know things like:
- Your ideal customer profile: who they are, what they search for, and what stops them from buying
- The details of your business: what you sell, how you price it, and what makes you different from competitors
- Your market: who else is competing for the same customers, and what those competitors do well or poorly
- Your goals: whether you are trying to grow leads, sales, or brand trust, specifically
- Your constraints: budget, team size, existing content, and deadlines
Leave any of that out, and AI invents its own version of it, or defaults to whatever generic answer fits best. That guess might push you to pivot on something you didn't need to change, or aim your content at a customer that isn't yours.
Take a comparison article, one of the Big 5 content types every Endless Customers company needs to publish. Ask AI to draft one without that context, and it might compare you to three competitors. Coaches who have guided hundreds of these builds know five or six is usually the number that earns trust or performs better. AI has no way of knowing that unless you tell it, and if you don’t know to ask, you won’t catch it either.
The same pattern shows up in smaller, more technical ways too: two H1 tags stacked on one page, a missing meta description, a keyword left out entirely. None of these look dramatic on their own. Stacked together, they degrade how much traffic and trust that content ever earns you.
Free Marketing Assessment: Where do you stand?
AI is changing how buyers find businesses, and most companies are dangerously underprepared. Take this free assessment and find out if yours is at risk of becoming invisible to your buyers.
What does a marketing coach catch that AI can't?
A coach brings lived experience watching a system like this succeed and fail across hundreds of other companies. AI hasn't lived through any of that. It can tell you what should work in theory. It can't tell you, from experience, what does.
AI is also built to agree with you. Ask it whether your strategy is solid, and it will usually find a way to say yes, because agreeing with you is what keeps you coming back to it. A coach who has watched this system play out across hundreds of companies will tell you when something is off, even when that's not what you want to hear.
That doesn't mean coaching is right for every business. Some companies have the discipline, time, and internal expertise to keep executing an AI-built strategy well on their own, and IMPACT isn't the answer for all of them.
IMPACT client Nick Burrage put it plainly in a review of his own experience with the system: "You must commit to doing the work. This isn’t a hand-the-keys-over programme. That’s precisely why it works, and why it’s not right for everyone."
Mike Ritzema's team saw the other side of that. Before working with IMPACT, they were writing articles here and there, posting inconsistently, and missing clear calls to action, and the content wasn't building trust or generating sales opportunities. After bringing in a coach, their website traffic grew 18 percent in a single year, their sales opportunities nearly tripled, and the growth let them hire a salesperson for the first time in four years.
Publishing is only the first accountability gap. The same thing happens after content goes live: someone has to track whether it's working, adjust distribution when it isn't, and decide what to double down on.
That ongoing accountability, not just the first draft, is where a coach keeps earning their spot on a team.
Do you need AI, a coach, or both?
Most companies need both, not one instead of the other. Author Jim Collins calls this the Genius of the AND: treating a decision as and instead of or almost always produces a stronger outcome than picking a single side.
If you're getting real wins on your own, keep going. There's no reason to bring on outside help just because you technically could. But if you've hired a content manager or a videographer and you genuinely can't tell whether they're excelling or falling behind, that's a different problem.
A coach who works with ten other content managers across ten other companies can tell you plainly which one you have, and AI still can't.
How do AI and coaching work together on real marketing tasks?
The clearest way to see this is task by task.
|
Marketing Task |
What AI Handles |
What a Coach Adds |
|
Comparison articles |
Drafts the first version from your notes on each competitor |
Reviews it for bias, the right competitor count, and whether it sounds like your team |
|
Assignment Selling/ Sales Enablement |
Helps write and rehearse the script |
Coaches the delivery, tone, and body language behind the words |
|
Editorial calendar |
Builds a full year of topic ideas in minutes |
Prioritizes which topics matter most for this quarter’s goals |
|
On-page SEO and AEO |
Drafts the page structure and keyword targets |
Catches missing meta descriptions, duplicate H1s, and keyword gaps before publishing. Key to a timely and relevant strategy. |
|
Performance review |
Pulls traffic, engagement, and conversion data into a report |
Reads those numbers against what is happening in the market and adjusts the plan |
Where coaching changes everything
And the added bonus of coaching versus using a marketing agency is that you are confidently building expert-level capabilities inside your own team. Everything a coach can identify, teach, and implement, your team is learning, too.
For example: On a comparison article, that single revision loop is where a good first draft becomes a page that converts.
And Assignment Selling works the same way, with one real difference: AI can help you learn the words, but it can’t stand across from you and say, "stand up straighter, shoulders back, now say it like you just won the lottery." The energy and delivery behind assignment selling change the results as much as the words do, and that is still a human coaching skill.
When is it time to bring in a coach?
A few signs tend to show up before a company decides it is time for a coach.
1. You have a long list of good ideas with no clear sense of which one moves the needle this quarter.
2. You have a big initiative on the calendar, a site relaunch, a new market, a new offer, where getting it wrong costs far more than a coach would.
3. Misalignment between sales and marketing: the content team is producing, and the sales team either isn’t using it or doesn’t trust it yet.
Building a marketing strategy used to be expensive. A basic marketing strategy from an agency could run $50,000 or more, and building it took weeks of manual research.
But today, AI can hand you a strategy for free in an afternoon. What still costs something, and what a coach still provides, is the judgment to know if that strategy is any good, and the accountability to make sure it gets executed every week.

Bob Ruffolo and I talked through everything on the Endless Customers Podcast, working through it step by step.
Why the system matters more than the tool
AI didn’t create Endless Customers, but the system is exactly why AI works so well once you apply it. Endless Customers tells AI what a good marketing strategy needs to include, what questions your content has to answer, and what order to tackle everything in. Hand AI a documented system instead of a vague idea of better marketing, and it stops guessing.
That is what decides whether a company builds a strategy AI can help execute well, or one that sounds generic no matter how much time goes into prompting it. A coach can give you the direction and accountability you need to get the job done, unless your team is wholly committed to implementation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a marketing coach cost compared to building a strategy with AI on your own?
AI is close to free to use. IMPACT's coaching starts with a $5,000 one-time Deep Diagnostic and Roadmap, then a $3,750 monthly base fee, with most engagements adapting to how much support a team needs after that. Coaching runs month-to-month with a 30-day cancellation notice. The cost buys a coach who catches gaps AI can't see, keeps a team accountable to the plan, and adjusts the approach as results come in.
What is the difference between a marketing coach and a marketing agency?
A marketing coach works alongside your team, teaching them to plan, create, and execute the Endless Customers System themselves so they build that skill set in-house. An agency takes on the execution directly, producing the content, campaigns, or website work for you. IMPACT offers both, and some clients start with coaching to build that capability, then bring in agency support for specific projects like a website redesign or paid media management.
How long does it take to see results from working with a marketing coach?
There's no set timeline. Results depend on the company and how much time and effort the team puts into implementing the plan. A coach who has seen this play out before can catch the mistakes that stall someone building a strategy with AI on their own, so progress tends to move faster with a coach than without one.
