Walk like a boss. Talk
Both inside and outside the business world, society seems enamored with the idea of being a “boss” and all that comes with it.
Perhaps it’s the perception of ownership, accomplishment, or autonomy; of corner offices and big paychecks. Being a boss, however, isn’t always as glamorous or carefree as it looks from a distance (or on Mad Men, for that matter).
Being in charge of an organization or team comes with great responsibility and as anyone who’s ever quit a job because of a terrible manager will tell you, not everyone is cut out for it.
This quarter, leadership and management have been big topics of conversation at IMPACT.
Many team members are moving into managerial positions for the first time, while others are considering whether it may be a future career path for them. Quickly the question will arise, “Am I a good boss?”
Today, that comes down to emotional intelligence and leadership skills as much as it does specific industry knowledge and it can be a difficult thing to judge yourself on.
Luckily, there’s a great deal of knowledge out there to help you evaluate yourself and improve.
In this infographic by Headway Capital, for instance, you’ll find an easy-to-follow flowchart that based on your leadership style and priorities amongst other things, will put you into one of three buckets:
- Great Boss
- Good Boss With Room for Improvement
- You Need Work
It also outlines 5 tips for being a better boss regardless of your results:
- Gain clarity on your team’s objectives
- Get feedback from your team
- Reflect on your own actions
- Get out of their way (As I’d say, give them tools, then give them space.)
- Recognize their success
